Welcome back for another SubModern Report where we do not have any Canadian reporters, but we are all about the Can Con this week with the top three singles originating from The Great White North. First up we have Weird Nightmare, following up on their #1 single from the fall with "Might See You There", which will appear on their just-announced sophomore record Hoopla. Both Metric and Broken Social Scene have also just announced new albums and dropped singles, "Victim of Luck" and "Not Around Anymore", coming in at #2 and #3. Plus those two will be touring together this summer.
Ratboys may not be Canadian, but they do have the #1 album this week, Singin' To An Empty Chair, featuring #7 single "Penny In The Lake". In fact, only one Canadian artist made the top ten albums, but we'll get to them in a bit. At #2 is Arlo Parks with the forthcoming Ambiguous Desire, which features a new single "Heaven" at #4. Mitski's soon-to-be-released Nothing's About To Happen To Me is next at #3 with the track "I'll Change For You" at #10t. Lala Lala is at #4 with Heaven 2 and "Arrow" lands at #8t on the singles chart. And the last artist to transcend the the top ten of both charts is Thundercat with the just-announced Distracted at #5t and "I Did This To Myself" (ft. Lil Yachty) also tied at #8.
Some of the singles that were skipped over in my non-linear look at the top ten are "In Your Hands" by The Sherlocks at #5 and "Seven Degrees" by Friko at #6. There's also a big tie at #10 that includes "Red Rocking Chair" by All Them Witches, "Count" by Mystic Knights, and SPRINTS' version of "Deceptacon" by Le Tigre, along with the already-mentioned Mitski tune.
Earlier I mentioned a #5 tie on the album chart. - that also features The Molotovs' Wasted On Youth and Canadian twins Softcult with When A Flower Doesn't Grow. Last week's #1 album I Used To Go To This Bar from Joyce Manor is #8 this week, followed by Punchbag's just-announced I Am Obsessed EP at #9. That leaves us with a tie at #10 between Lime Garden's forthcoming Maybe Not Tonight and Mandy, Indiana's brand new URGH.
For a more straight-forward representation of the top tens (and beyond), check out the full charts HERE. As usual there's also a whole lot of new music on deck to fill up the coming week's shows and charts. You can scope it all out on the Available For Airplay list of course. You may just find records from Angel Du$t, Cardinals, Chet Faker, congratulations, Dream Nails, Felsmann + Tiley, LAPêCHE, and Last Dinosaurs, plus singles by Bleachers, Kevin Morby, MUNA, Witch Post, and more.
Before I head off, I want to salute a long-time reporter that we'll be losing after this week. New York's WFUV is eliminating some of their specialty programming, including The Alternate Side. Host Russ Boris will wrap up its decade long run (even longer if you get into its history as a side channel) this Friday night. Bummed to say the least about this news.
With that I'll wrap things up by wishing you all and your special someones a Happy Valentine's Day.
